Drawing on current PhD research, this presentation examines the state of the tertiary gallery sector in Aotearoa and explores factors that can positively influence the sustained operations of these galleries. It will provide a framework to articulate operational and functional variances across the sector and suggest best practice. An overview of the initial data collected, along with preliminary analysis, forms this gallery operational framework.

Biography

Wendy Richdale is a gallery curator and academic manager of the contemporary art and communication programmes at Wintec School of Media Arts, a tertiary education provider in Hamilton, New Zealand. Prior to moving into this management role, Wendy spent over 8 years as curator and manager of Wintec’s on campus art gallery ‘Ramp Gallery’, delivering an annual programme of exhibitions, workshops, seminars and events. Wendy has an undergraduate art degree from Wintec and a postgraduate diploma in Fine Art from Massey University and is a current PhD candidate with CQU. Wendy’s current PhD project brings together her curatorial and educational programme management expertise by examining the tertiary art gallery sector in Aotearoa New Zealand – looking to uncover factors that contribute to the sustainability of the sector.
